Derek Muller is a science communicator, filmmaker, and television presenter. He is best known for creating the YouTube channels Veritasium and 2Veritasium.
Videos on these channels have been viewed more than 65 million times. Approximately 1.4 million people have subscribed. Muller writes, directs, films, edits, animates, and stars in these science videos.
Muller has said the goal of his films is to show science’s “relevance, comprehensibility, and lack of dry, boring, textbook-style exposition.”
His work has been featured on Scientific American, Wired, Gizmodo and i09.
Muller was born in Traralgon, a city in regional Victoria, Australia, and moved to Vancouver as an infant. He graduated from Queen's University with a B.Sc in Engineering Physics in 2004 and completed a PhD in physics education research from the University of Sydney in 2008. His thesis, “Designing Effective Multimedia for Physics Education,” was the subject of his TEDxSydney talk in 2012.
Muller has appeared as a television presenter on Australia television program Catalyst since
2011, reporting scientific stories from around the globe. Muller has also appeared on the Australian television network Ten as the 'Why Guy' on the Breakfast program.
