Call for Nominations: Sigma Xi Awards
Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society invites nominations for its annual awards. Each year, the Society recognizes exceptional scientists and engineers for their achievements and contributions to the advancement of the research enterprise. The awards include the Gold Key Award, the Linda H. Mantel Next Generation Women's Leadership Award, the William Procter Prize for Scientific Achievement, the John P. McGovern Science and Society Award, the Walston Chubb Award for Innovation, the Young Investigator Award, the Evan Ferguson Award, and Honorary Membership.
Nominations are accepted through January 31. Sigma Xi’s Committee on Awards reviews the nominations and makes recommendations to the Board of Directors. Winners will be announced in the summer with awards to be presented at Sigma Xi’s Annual Meeting and Student Research Conference in the fall. Nominations packets should be emailed to awards@sigmaxi.org and include the following documents:
- Nomination letter, including a brief (~25 words) introductory statement of the nominee’s accomplishments that led to the nomination
- Nominee’s current curriculum vitae
- Up to two additional letters of support
Nominators should refer to additional requirements and eligibility criteria that are specific to each of the awards.
- Gold Key Award
The award is presented to a member who has made extraordinary contributions to his or her profession and has fostered critical innovations to enhance the health of the research enterprise, to cultivate integrity in research, or to promote the public understanding of science for the purpose of improving the human condition. The recipient receives a gold Sigma Xi key.
- Linda H. Mantel Next Generation Women’s Leadership Award
The award recognizes the outstanding service and leadership potential of an early career scholar/researcher who identifies as a woman and requires demonstrable service and/or leadership in a Sigma Xi chapter or in another capacity within the Society or scientific community and at least three years of active membership from the time of induction, including the year of award selection. Candidates must be nominated within 10 years of completing a doctoral degree. It includes a commemorative certificate, a $2,500 honorarium for use towards a leadership or professional development training opportunity.
- The William Proctor Prize for Scientific Achievement
The award is presented to a scientist who has made outstanding contributions to scientific research and demonstrated the ability to communicate their research to scientists across disciplines. It includes a $5,000 honorarium, $5,000 grant to a young colleague of the recipient's choice and a bronze statue.

The John P. McGovern Science and Society Award
The award recognizes achievements by a scientist or engineer that transcend their career as a researcher. It consists of a medal and a $5,000 honorarium.

The Walston Chubb Award for Innovation
The award honors and promotes creativity in science and engineering and includes a $4,000 honorarium.

The Young Investigator Award
The award recognizes outstanding early career researchers across life, physical, and social sciences. Nominees must be active Sigma Xi members and within 10 years of receiving their highest degree. The award includes a $5,000 honorarium.

Evan Ferguson Award
The award is presented to any Sigma Xi member, affiliate, staff member, or friend of the Society in recognition of their outstanding service to Sigma Xi and its mission.

Honorary Membership
Science advocates, top science journalists, and friends of research, who have made important contributions to science but are not eligible for Sigma Xi membership, are inducted into the Society as honorary members.
