Dr. Philip J. Wyatt Technology Transfer Award

Established in 2025, the Dr. Philip J. Wyatt Technology Transfer Award supports the commercialization aspects of Sigma Xi members’ research, aiding in bridging the gap between research and commercial viability. Commercialization is the process of transforming research discoveries into marketable products or services, involving steps like patenting, industry collaboration, and strategy development to bring innovations to consumers. Nominations, including letters of recommendation, should be submitted by e-mail to awards@sigmaxi.org.

Objective

The objective of this award is to promote the commercialization of scientific research for health, security, or economic betterment of society.

Award Amount
$7,500, presented annually.

Approved applications of funds include but are not limited to:

  • Developing the technology into a product or service that can be sold in the market
  • Further development of the technology
  • Protecting intellectual property with patents and copyrights
  • Regulatory approvals
  • Sales and marketing
  • Support and training

Eligibility

  • Open to any active (dues-paying) Sigma Xi member at the time of the nomination.
  • Self-nominations are accepted.

Nomination Materials

  • Current curriculum vitae following Sigma Xi criteria.
  • Nomination letters must collectively address the following:
  • Explanation of the nominee’s research and its potential for commercialization.
  • Description of the nominee’s contributions to technology transfer and commercialization.
  • Demonstration of how the award will support the nominee’s efforts in bringing their research to market.
  • Summary of any past achievements in technology transfer or commercialization.
  • Explanation of how this award contributes to an overall technology transfer business plan and budget.
  • 1-2 letters of support (no more than one page each).
  • A letter of support from the nominee’s affiliated institution confirming ownership of intellectual property.
