David Flannigan is the recipient of the 2018 Sigma Xi Young Investigator Award. This award is available to active Sigma Xi members within 10 years of his or her highest earned degree at the time of the nomination. The honor recognizes excellence in research and includes a certificate of recognition and a $5,000 honorarium. The recipient is invited to present a lecture at the Sigma Xi Annual Meeting.
Flannigan is an associate professor of chemical engineering and materials science at the University of Minnesota. His research focuses on the visualization of nanoscale materials dynamics with ultrafast electron microscopy. He received his BS degree and PhD in chemistry from the University of Minnesota and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, respectively, after which he was a postdoctoral scholar in the labs of Ahmed Zewail at California Institute of Technology.
He is the recipient of a Beckman Young Investigator Award, a National Science Foundation CAREER Award, and a Department of Energy Early Career Award. He is currently a McKnight Presidential Fellow and the director of Undergraduate Studies for Materials Science and Engineering.
