Resolution on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
WHEREAS, many nations, including the United States of America, have pursued principles of equality as espoused in their founding documents, and though progress has been episodic, borne of a long and arduous journey furthered by activism and sacrifice, recent incidents serve as evidence that equality remains an aspiration rather than a reality for many;
WHEREAS, Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society is committed to building an equitable and inclusive scientific and engineering community for all persons, without regard to ethnicity, race, creed, cultural background, gender identity, national or native origin, physical ability, religious affiliation, or sexual orientation, and recognizes that all these vast diversities exist among, and benefit, our membership;
WHEREAS, Sigma Xi has a responsibility to advocate for equity and inclusivity in all segments of society and to call for systemic changes to end discrimination and, given its focus on science, it will strive to fulfill its mission of strengthening the research community by engaging all people and embracing their diverse experiences and perspectives;
WHEREAS, Sigma Xi recognizes diversity, equity, and inclusion as essential to positive and healthy communities, and it will act to make these aspirations a reality;
and
WHEREAS, Sigma Xi recognizes the value of the vastness of human diversity within its membership, throughout scientific communities, and society-at-large as essential and enriching to learning, working, the human experience in general, and living the ideals of a free and democratic society, it will develop actions that are far-reaching and transformational;
Be it therefore RESOLVED that Sigma Xi
1. will affirm as matters of principle the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion in every aspect of governance, operations, and services rendered to its membership and the public at large; and
2. will demonstrate by example and leadership the Society’s commitment to the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
On behalf of the Board of Directors and the Membership of Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society, I hereby adopt the Resolution on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion on this 5th day of November 2020.
