RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C.―Postdoctoral scholars and graduate students can now save 20 percent on membership fees when they are elected to Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society and concurrently join the National Postdoctoral Association (NPA). A new joint membership application has been created.
The joint rate is available to new members, who will also be able to renew their memberships annually at a discount when they continue participation in both organizations.
“Postdocs play a critical role in the research enterprise, but put in more hours than the average American full-time worker and may initially make less money than those who do not pursue a doctoral degree,” said Jamie Vernon, Sigma Xi executive director and CEO. “This new membership discount will enable them to benefit from the career development, networking, and mentoring opportunities that are available through Sigma Xi and receive career support from the National Postdoctoral Association.”
Interested individuals may apply for membership through Sigma Xi. Those who head to the NPA website when joining will be directed to the Sigma Xi website.
Sigma Xi and NPA will also work together on publishing projects, particularly surveys and reports such as the 2017 National Postdoctoral Association Institutional Policy Report.
“The National Postdoctoral Association is excited about the new partnership with Sigma Xi. From the publication of our policy survey to the partnership on membership, I am sure both organizations will benefit from the relationship,” said NPA executive director Julie Fabsik-Swarts.
Sigma Xi’s mission is to improve the human condition by enhancing the health of the research enterprise, fostering integrity in science and engineering, and promoting the public’s understanding of science. NPA seeks sustainable change and improvement for the postdoctoral experience.
