Robert Boily

Robert Boily is a Canadian multidisciplinary scientist with academic background in natural sciences (physics, electronics, optics, micro‐imaging) and social sciences (education, psychology of learning). He received his Ph.D. from the University of Montreal and his career spans more than 40 years in basic and applied research. He worked 10 years for Eastman Kodak and 7 years in a government laboratory before founding his research company in 1996. Since then, he worked as senior scientist and senior science advisor for institutions of the Government of Canada and the Government of Quebec (Canadian Space Agency, Department of National Defence, National Research Council of Canada, National Institute of Scientific Research, Hydro‐Quebec, etc.) for more than 30 years.

His research covers most of the main fields of natural sciences and technology such as aeropace, nanotechnology, photonics, electronics, advanced materials, energy, medical imaging and robotics.

In 2015, he was commissioned by the Government of Canada to help define the national research priorities in clean energy (wind energy, hydro‐electricity, solar photovoltaics, hydrogen fuel cells, bioenergy, carbon capture and storage, geothermal, tidal power), with a special consideration for remote communities and the Arctic.

In 2003, 2004 and 2012, he was commissioned by the Canadian Space Agency to evaluate the feasibility and infrastructures of manned and unmanned scientific research projects (astrophysics, atmospheric research, medical research) in microgravity onboard the International Space Station and suborbital vehicles such as scientific rockets, high‐altitude balloons and commercial spacecrafts.

Since 1980, he conducted more than 1000 research projects and produced over 600 science reports and communication documents. Among the many honors he received is the 2008 John P. McGovern Award from Sigma Xi. He was also elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada (in the Academy of Science), and received numerous other distinctions from Canada, France, the United States and the United Kingdom. He is Honorary Lieutenant Colonel of the Canadian Armed Forces.
