Antonio Baines
Associate Professor, NC Central University
Associate Professor, UNC-Chapel Hill
Biography
Science was always one of the courses that Dr. Antonio (Tony) Baines excelled in throughout high school. It was this love for science that led him to major in biology as an honor student at Norfolk State University (NSU) in Norfolk, Virginia. After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in biology in 1995, Tony was admitted to the Ph.D. program in pharmacology and toxicology at the University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona. As a graduate student in the Arizona Cancer Center, he studied chemoprevention and potential treatments against colon cancer.
In 2001, Tony received his Ph.D. in Pharmacology and Toxicology, becoming the 2nd African-American to graduate from the department in its approximately 30 years of its existence. Afterwards, Tony became a teaching/research postdoctoral fellow in the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH) in pharmacology studying molecular therapeutics against pancreatic cancer.
In August 2006, Tony accepted a faculty position in the Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences at North Carolina Central University (NCCU) in Durham, North Carolina where he currently teaches and continues his biomedical research on pancreatic cancer. He has received various awards over the years such as the University Teaching Award, the Society of Toxicology Undergraduate Educator Award, the American Association for Cancer Research Minority-Serving Institution Faculty Scholar Award, and the Outstanding Scientist and Champion of Research Excellence Award. He has various research publications in cancer journals and has received research funding from NIH as well as from industry. He serves on the leadership team of various scientific organizations as well as on NIH advisory boards.
During his free time, Tony likes to walk and jog, watch movies, read, travel, and most importantly, spend quality time with his wife Dinitra and 2 young daughters, Oliveea and Isabella.
