Sigma Xi invites submissions to its virtual STEM Art and Film Festival, featuring performing and visual arts that portray the beauty of science, communicate abstract principles, promote STEM education, exemplify the integration of arts in STEM, feature creative art therapies, and depict scientific discoveries and phenomena.
The Call for Submissions is open to scientists, science communicators, filmmakers, educators and artists on a broad spectrum of topics, including but not limited to astronomy, neuroscience, biology, oceanography, mathematics, or chemistry.
This event will be free to the public, including a broad spectrum of attendees across ages, disciplines, and interests.

Would You Like to Compete?
You may select to enter your submissions in the STEM Art and Film Festival competition. A panel of professional judges and a public vote will name the top submissions in each category to receive cash prizes of up to $500. If you plan to participate in the competition, please indicate that on the submission form.

Visual Arts Exhibits
Images and artwork that capture the moments where science and art collide are welcome. All forms of visual arts are eligible for participation including painting, photography, microscope images, ceramics, 2D and 3D visualization, drawing, sculpture, and fiber art.
Artists interested in selling their artwork during the event will be charged a $25 (US) registration fee after submissions are accepted.
Film Screenings
We invite submissions that showcase the intersection of science and filmmaking, tell a story of a scientific endeavor, or creatively explain a phenomenon. Creations of all lengths and categories, including documentaries, short videos, animations, data visualization, and science inspired fiction will be accepted. Submissions may or may not be related to your research.
Film Screening Logistics
- Before you make a submission, please upload your video or trailer to Vimeo or YouTube. You’ll be prompted to provide a link on the submission form.
- Leading up to the event, organizers will provide you with information on uploading film files for screening.
- Entries will be accepted in formats that include .mov, .avi, and .mp4.

Performing Arts
Pre-recorded performing arts related to science, technology, engineering, and math are welcome. Performing arts may include musical performances, dance, or other movement-based performances.

By making a submission, you attest that you have the right, including any required permission of individuals depicted in the video, to publicly display the video. You also confirm that any music or images contained therein do not violate any copyright, trademark, or other rights of any third party. By submitting your video, you grant Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society the right to promote the submitted video on the event’s website. Sigma Xi has the right to take screen shots of art at the festival and use the photos on Sigma Xi's website, emails, social media, and in promotions for future events.
