Join us to explore science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) through different forms of visual arts, including photography, painting, 3D visualization, videos, films, and documentaries. A special exhibit will be dedicated to the theme of the Sigma Xi Annual Meeting, Our Changing Global Environment, featuring artwork and films that provide insights into environmental changes and challenges facing the planet.

Science and Art in Extreme Environments

Real Science Talk 

With Allison Coffin and Kirsten (Kiki) Sanford of Science Talk, a nonprofit organization that seeks to empower and inspire the science communication community to expand their communication potential and affect the world. 

Chasing Coral

A free, public screening and discussion of the Netflix documentary film Chasing Coral—winner of a 2017 Sundance Film Festival Audience Award—will take place on Sunday, November 17, from noon to 2:30 p.m. at the Monona Terrace Convention Center's Lecture Hall in Madison, Wisconsin. 

The film shows how coral reefs are dying on a massive scale due to climate change and hopes to serve as a wake-up call to audiences that action is needed now to address environmental issues. 

Chasing Coral also won a Peabody Award in 2017 and an Emmy for Outstanding Nature Documentary in 2018.

Scientific Commentary

Jim Porter, a scientific advisor and cast member of the documentary Chasing Coral, will provide commentary during the screening. Porter is a past-president of Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society.

Local high schools are welcome to submit student-made STEM art for a chance for one of their students to win a Sigma Xi goodie bag! Interested schools should send an "intent to submit" message to meetings@sigmaxi.org by October 7.
