Dr. Jamie Vernon is currently an Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education Fellow with the U.S. Department of Energy, where he previously served for two years as an AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellow in the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE). He formerly served as Co-chair of the Social Media Communications Team for the U.S. Global Change Research Program's "Climate Communication and Education Interagency Working Group." Jamie is an award-winning science educator. He is NSF-trained to communicate science, founder of multiple science policy and outreach organizations, including ScienceOnline DC, Science in the Pub and UT SEforA.  He is a former co-blogger with Chris Mooney at The Intersection (Discover Magazine Blogs), where he covered the intersection of science and policy.  Recently, he was lead organizer for the 2013 ScienceOnline Climate conference that explored the intersection of climate science, communication, and the web. Prior to his current position, Jamie spent more than a decade conducting molecular biology discovery research and project management. Having received his Ph.D. from The University of Texas at Austin, he has worked on HIV vaccine development at the National Cancer Institute and is co-author of a biotechnology patent for a genetic engineering tool. He has a Master of Science from East Carolina University and a Bachelor of Science from North Carolina State University.
