Candidate's Statement:
It was always my desire to be a part of the prestigious and the oldest scientific organization in the nation. Sigma Xi gave me the opportunity to become a part and serve as a member. It’s very encouraging to see and hear various activities that Sigma Xi is conducting for young scientists and engineers across the nation. I would like to connect with people across the nation in various disciplines and provide solid platforms for young scientists to benefit from and contribute to Sigma Xi’s various activities such as annual research showcases, workshops and also help researchers to share their novel scientific studies through American Scientist magazine.

Candidate:
Perry J. Kurtz
Present Position:
Consultant
Chapter Affiliation:
State University College at Plattsburgh
Candidate's Statement:
I am currently an emeritus member of Sigma Xi having been elected to membership in the Chesapeake Chapter in April, 1976. The two features of the Society that I value the most relate to communication and education. I see the communication function as primarily one that facilitates interdisciplinary knowledge through vehicles such as American Scientist and Sigma Xi SmartBrief. Such vehicles are invaluable in stimulating awareness and nurturing fascination with the wide spectrum and the increasingly interrelated fields of science. Closely allied is the education function, whether applied to the formal classroom and lecture setting or more informally in helping to make all of us, whether research professionals, educators, or members of the lay public, more sophisticated in evaluating the quality of information presented to us through multiple media sources. I also appreciate that the Society helps us encourage young people to pursue and develop STEM-related careers with conferences, awards, and grants.
