Statement
I am relatively new to Sigma Xi, becoming a member only a few years prior to now serving as president of our local chapter. However, I have been actively engaged since then through invited lectures, presentations by members of my lab, and attendance at symposia and induction ceremonies. Importantly, I resonate very strongly with the mission statement having been engaged in research since my junior year in college. From day one I was amazed that I could spend a lifetime “doing my hobby” pursuing scientific research. This eye-opening experience was transformational and its impact was likely due to me being the first in my family to go into science and engineering (and the first to attend graduate school). Since then I have been a strong advocate of undergraduate research and the promotion of authentic mentor-mentee relationships like those that I was so fortunate to have early in my career. Research experiences are foundational for all, but are a key strategy for promoting diversity and inclusion in STEM fields, which is essential to the future of science and technology in the U.S.
As regional associate director, I would work closely with Northeast Regional Director Dr. Santos to revitalize existing chapters in the region. The activity of many regional chapters has decreased, but the framework for success is still present. Efforts could include:
-
Forming connections with regional chapter presidents and membership bodies.
-
Internal outreach/inreach efforts to show the importance of science and engineering research opportunities, especially for undergraduates. (The importance of these experiences is often taken for granted.)
-
Internal marketing efforts to reinforce to members the value of active chapters. I imagine that many chapters assume the activities central to Sigma Xi can be promoted without formal Sigma Xi chapter involvement. Thus, the Regional Director and I need to make a better argument for the value that Sigma Xi membership and active chapters provide.
-
Organization of a regional conference that would enable researchers to present their work to a broader audience. This would provide students with even greater learning opportunities and also help to form a more cohesive region, which directly ties into the value of Sigma Xi membership and chapter success.
