Biography
Manav Das is a leader of the University of Chicago chapter of Sigma Xi. He has been a member of Sigma Xi for over 20 years, starting at the University of Louisville. He was selected as Sigma Xi Ambassador and served the Louisville chapter for many years. After his move to Chicago, he has been reviving the Chicago chapter as well.
Dr. Das received his Ph. D. in Mathematics from The Ohio State University and went on to a successful research and academic career at the University of Louisville. His primary research area is in geometric measure theory and dynamical systems, especially in the area of multifractals. He has published research articles in leading international journals and has given several invited lectures. Dr. Das is named an inventor on three U.S. patents for various software technologies. His visits include MSRI (Berkeley), Institute of Mathematics (Palo Alto), Cornell University, Isaac Newton Institute (Cambridge), University of Warwick (Warwick), University of Washington (Seattle), Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (UCLA), Indian Statistical Institute (Delhi), and others.
Dr. Das was selected for a Fulbright Lecture Award and received several grants from the NSF. He is an elected Fellow of the American Bar Foundation. He served as a managing editor for the Real Analysis Exchange (a mathematics research journal published by Michigan State University), and continues to serve on the Editorial Board as a contributing editor.
During his time as a tenured faculty at the University of Louisville, he served in several academic leadership positions including as a liaison for the Arts and Sciences (A&S) Dean’s office to the Office of Technology Transfer, Office of Grants, and the Office of Corporate Relations, and was appointed to University-wide task forces by the Provost. He was a Director for Undergraduate Studies in Mathematics, Chair of the A&S Personnel Committee, Chair of the Faculty Search Committee, served on the A&S Curriculum committee and the Budget Committee.
Dr. Das also received his Juris Doctor from the University of Louisville and transitioned to practice intellectual property law. He is currently a partner at McDonnell Boehnen Hulbert and Berghoff in Chicago. His practice focuses on machine learning, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, networking, AI driven healthcare platforms, social networking and e-commerce platforms, and structured finance.
Dr. Das has been involved with a number of organizations, including as Secretary and Board Member of the Illinois Intellectual Property Alliance, member of the AI task force for the Global Intellectual Property Alliance, former Secretary and current co-Vice Chair of the US Patent Office Practice Committee of the Intellectual Property Owners Association, and a former Vice Chair of the Electronic and Computer Law Committee of the American Intellectual Property Law Association.
