The Sigma Xi Grants in Aid of Research (GIAR) program has been funding research by undergraduate and graduate students since 1922. Last week, 143 students who applied by the March 15, 2019, deadline learned that their proposals were accepted. Collectively, the students received $137,984. The Committee on Grants in Aid of Research, chaired by Peter J. Harries of North Carolina State University, selected 26 undergraduate students, 33 master’s students, and 84 doctoral candidates to receive grants. The awardees are from 35 states as well as Canada, Brazil, and Australia.

Students may apply for funding from the program twice each year at sigmaxi.org/programs/grants-in-aid. The next application deadline is October 1. The grants are made possible by designated funds from the National Academy of Sciences and from donations. Thirteen percent of the 1,126 grant applications received in the spring 2019 cycle were funded and the average grant was worth $964. More grants could be awarded in future cycles if more donations are received.
