Letter to the Trump Administration about the Future of American Research

March 20, 2025

Dear President Trump,

On behalf of Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society, we write to initiate a conversation about the future of the American research enterprise and to request immediate clarification on your administration’s plan to sustain and advance science in the United States. The recent actions of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), along with broader shifts in federal science policy, have created significant uncertainty in the research community. Funding disruptions, conflicting policy signals, and concerns over scientific integrity now jeopardize our nation’s long-standing global leadership in research and innovation.

Since its founding in 1886 at Cornell University, Sigma Xi has been at the forefront of supporting scientists and engineers who drive technological progress and economic prosperity. American leadership in science is not only a matter of national pride but also an essential driver of economic growth, public health, and national security. To maintain this leadership, we need a clear and actionable plan from your administration on how it intends to invest in scientific research, protect scientific integrity, and ensure that the United States remains at the forefront of global innovation.

The past several years have demonstrated that science is not a luxury; it is a necessity. Investments in fields such as artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and energy research are pivotal to securing America’s future competitiveness. Yet, recent budget cuts and agency reorganizations have sent a troubling message to the research community. Scientists, engineers, and students across the country are facing job losses, halted research projects, and an erosion of public confidence in the sustainability of scientific institutions.

We recognize that your administration has a new vision for the U.S. research enterprise. However, further delay and prolonged uncertainty could cause irreparable damage to our nation’s ability to innovate and lead. We urge you to promptly outline your administration’s strategy for:

  • Funding and sustaining federal research agencies such as the National Science Foundation (NSF), National Institutes of Health (NIH), and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)

  • Protecting the integrity of scientific research from political influence and ensuring that federal agencies operate based on sound scientific principles

  • Investing in research and development to maintain America’s economic competitiveness in the face of increasing international competition, particularly from China

  • Addressing the impacts of funding uncertainty on young researchers and ensuring a stable pipeline for the next generation of scientists and engineers.

As a leading organization representing thousands of scientists, engineers, and researchers, Sigma Xi stands ready to work with your administration to find solutions that uphold the principles of scientific integrity, advance innovation, and secure America’s prosperity. We urge you to provide a detailed plan addressing these critical concerns and look forward to engaging in meaningful dialogue on the future of American science.

Sincerely,

Jamie L. Vernon, PhD
