RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC—Student researchers have been asked to leave their campuses for the spring due to the coronavirus outbreak and that means no campus housing, no campus jobs, and no research conferences.
Sigma Xi recognizes that students invest time and effort into their research and in preparing to present a poster or give a talk at a conference, where they also participate in sessions that contribute to professional growth.
A new event from Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society will fill the role of that in-person experience this spring: the Virtual Student Scholars Symposium, or VS3 (pronounced: V S Cubed). VS3 will take place on May 14 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET via Zoom. All students worldwide in high school through graduate school are invited to present their research in an oral or poster presentation. No Sigma Xi affiliation is required to participate. Sigma Xi members, who are distinguished scientists and engineers, will judge the presentations and select one oral and one poster presentation from each of the graduate, undergraduate, and high school divisions to win $250.
VS3 will also include career preparation sessions and a keynote session.
VS3 is limited to 100 student participants. Students are invited to submit an abstract by April 17. Students will be invited to register upon abstract review and approval. The review process will be waived for abstracts previously accepted at a national or international conference that was canceled due to COVID-19. Students will be asked to send proof of prior acceptance to programs@sigmaxi.org
This is the second virtual research presentation opportunity that Sigma Xi is hosting for students this spring. The Society had also re-opened the abstract submission period for its annual Student Research Showcase.
