Donna Weistrop
Donna Weistrop holds degrees in astronomy from Wellesley College (B.A.), where she was a Durant Scholar and graduated with Special Honors, and the California Institute of Technology (Ph.D.). She has been on the staff at universities (Tel Aviv University, Ohio State University, University of Arizona, and University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV)), research institutions (the National Optical Astronomy Observatory), the federal government (NASA), and private industry (the Applied Research Corporation). She has taught astronomy at the introductory, intermediate, and graduate levels, and supervised master’s and Ph.D. students. She has chaired and been a member of several NSF and NASA grant review panels and telescope time allocation committees and served as a peer reviewer for astronomical journals. She also served as Chair of the National Undergraduate Research Observatory, which provides undergraduate students with research experience.
Weistrop was a co-investigator on the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) Instrument Investigation Team for which she and her students were supported with a NASA contract of nearly $1million. STIS is a second generation instrument which was installed on the Hubble Space Telescope in 1997. She retired as Professor Emerita of Physics at UNLV.
Since retiring, she has served as the Chair of the Lowell Observatory Foundation and as a member of the Executive Committee of the Lowell Observatory Advisory Board. She is also a member of the Advisory Council of the Northern Arizona University's Martin Springer Institute.
Experience with Sigma Xi
Weistrop was elected to Sigma Xi as an undergraduate at Wellesley College. She has been a member ever since and helped establish the Sigma Xi chapter at UNLV when she was a professor there.
