The Sigma Xi Grants in Aid of Research (GIAR) program has been funding research by undergraduate and graduate students since 1922. The Committee on Grants in Aid of Research reviewed 765 applications for research funding that were received by the October 1, 2019, deadline and selected 95 students to receive grants. Collectively, the students received $99,811. The committee, chaired by Peter J. Harries of North Carolina State University, selected 21 undergraduate students, 17 master’s students, and 57 doctoral candidates to receive grants. The awardees are from 33 states as well as Argentina, Canada, Mexico, Nigeria, and Spain. They represent 12 percent of the applications received. The average grant was worth $1,050.
The list of recipients is available.
Students may apply for funding from the program twice each year at sigmaxi.org/giar. Applications are reviewed twice each year. The next application deadline is March 15.
The grants are made possible thanks to designated funds from the National Academy of Sciences and donations. The Society recently received two gifts to support more underrepresented minorities and women in research through grants: a $10,000 gift from the late Joseph E. Kist to be distributed as grants through Sigma Xi Chapters to support women in computational science, and $10,000 from the Ruby K. Worner Foundation to serve underrepresented minorities and women in research directly through the GIAR program.
