RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. ― With less than two weeks left before thousands of people participate in the March for Science movement on April 22, organizers are sharing event details of partners and information to help people get involved.
Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society, recognized as the first major scientific partner of the march, welcomes science fans from the Triangle and across the state to ride its charter bus to the March for Science in Washington DC from its headquarters in Research Triangle Park. Interested riders are encouraged to sign up at: https://fs28.formsite.com/IWbCo3/form3/index.html.
The Society has been supporting the national organizers by providing guidance on the march. Offering the transportation option is an additional opportunity to bring scientists and science enthusiasts together to fulfill the mission of the march.
“Sigma Xi invites science supporters of all ages to ride to our nation’s capital for this flagship event,” said Sigma Xi Executive Director and CEO John Nemeth. “The march promotes, in an apolitical and nonpartisan manner, the value of research and its role in American society. The movement is gaining traction as our chapter members are stepping out of labs, classrooms, and offices to redirect their time and expertise toward championing this celebration of science.”
Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society is encouraging its members across the country to join local organizing efforts for the March for Science on April 22. March organizers are also working with Sigma Xi to partner with its 500 chapters of scientists and engineers—located at educational institutions, government laboratories, and industry research centers—to connect in Washington, DC and at nearly 300 satellite events across the globe.
“Our involvement in the March for Science is part of the Society’s duty to uphold the importance of research in a nonpartisan way, to promote the integrity and ethics of people who conduct science, and to share their work for the benefit of all people,” added Nemeth.
The public is encouraged to contact a Sigma Xi chapter near them at www.sigmaxi.org/chapters to connect with researchers in their area. Chapters can find a local satellite march on the March for Science website. Sigma Xi members and chapters across the country will take buses to the march in Washington, DC. Others will participate in local marches.
Sigma Xi is serving as a fiscal sponsor for satellite marches that are organized by Sigma Xi members and chapters. This involves managing donations taken in by organizers. So far, marches in New York City, Columbus, Chicago, San Francisco and San Diego are using these services.
Leading up to the marches, researchers are encouraged to share stories of how they serve their communities on social media using the hashtag: #ScienceServes. This campaign is intended to showcase the many ways science saves lives, protects communities, and advances the public interest.
The march is one of many ways that Sigma Xi has promoted science and scientific integrity over the last 130 years. The March for Science and Sigma Xi align in that both are apolitical organizations that promote science outreach and the use of evidenced-based information in policy making.
