Members Receive National Medals

Sigma Xi KeyFour Sigma Xi members received the National Medal of Science and three members received the National Medal of Technology and Innovation during a White House ceremony on May 19. These medals are the highest honor in the United States for achievement and leadership in advancing the fields of science and technology. 

The National Medal of Science is administered by the National Science Foundation and the National Medal of Technology and Innovation is administered by the U.S. Department of Commerce's Patent and Trademark Office. 

Sigma Xi members who received the National Medal of Science

  • Dr. Shirley Ann Jackson, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, NY
  • Dr. Rakesh K. Jain, Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital, MA
  • Dr. Mary-Claire King, University of Washington, WA
  • Dr. Simon Levin, Princeton University, NJ

Sigma Xi members who received the National Medal of Technology and Innovation

  • Dr. Joseph DeSimone, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina State University, and Carbon3D, CA*
  • Dr. Nancy Ho, Green Tech America, Inc. and Purdue University, IN
  • Dr. Cato T. Laurencin, University of Connecticut, CT

* Joseph DeSimone received the 2012 Sigma Xi Walston Chubb Award for Innovation.
