Five Sigma Xi members have been named 2016 Goldwater Scholars. They will receive undergraduate scholarships that will cover the cost of tuition, fees, books, and room and board up to a maximum of $7,500 per year for one or two years. Three Sigma Xi members were given honorable mentions.
In total, the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation awarded 252 scholarships for the 2016–2017 academic year to undergraduate sophomores and juniors from the United States.
The scholars were selected based on academic merit and were nominated by Goldwater faculty representatives from U.S. colleges and universities. Virtually all of the scholars intend to obtain a PhD.
The foundation is a federally endowed agency. The scholarship program honors Senator Barry Goldwater, pictured above, and was designed to encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in math, the natural sciences, and engineering.
