Excel Silver Awards logoResearch Triangle Park, N.C.—Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society’s magazine American Scientist recently garnered more recognition as a leader in the publishing industry. The magazine was honored with two Silver Awards at the 35th Annual EXCEL Awards Gala held June 15 in Washington, D.C. This recognition comes soon after the magazine was announced as the winner of two additional awards from the 2015 APEX Awards for Publication Excellence.

The EXCEL Awards are run by Association Media & Publishing to recognize excellence and leadership of nonprofit association media, publishing, marketing, and communications. Categories range from web publishing and media innovation to magazines, newsletters, newspapers, journals, and books, among many others. EXCEL Awards are given in bronze, silver, and gold tiers.

2014-01Cover_300wideAmerican Scientist earned this year’s Silver EXCEL Award in the Journals–General Excellence category. It was the highest award given this year for that category.

It also took the Silver EXCEL Award from the Journals–Feature Article category for the cover story of the January–February 2014 issue, “How to Fight Back Against Antibiotic Resistance.” This article was written by Gautam Dantas, an assistant professor of pathology/immunology and biomedical engineering at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, and Morten O. A. Sommer, a professor of systems biology at the Technical University of Denmark. It explains how mapping the exchange of genes between pathogens and nonpathogens offers new ways to understand and manage the spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

American Scientist  is published so that scientists and engineers can share their work directly with the public and other researchers,” said David Moran, the magazine’s publisher and member of Sigma Xi’s Board of Directors. “The Society is proud that its magazine is once again an EXCEL Award winner.”

American Scientist  has earned EXCEL Awards in the past, most recently in 2014 with a Silver Award in Journals–Cover Design and a Gold Award in Journals–Design Excellence.

Sigma Xi has published American Scientist since 1913. Starting July 1, 2015, Sigma Xi members will receive their choice of a print or digital subscription included with their membership dues.
