Research Triangle Park, N.C. — American Scientist built on its reputation as a high-quality magazine in this year’s APEX Awards for Publication Excellence. The magazine of Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society collected two Awards of Excellence in the international communications contest.
“These honors are a testament to the dedication of our authors as well as our editorial and design teams to deliver dependable, authoritative science and engineering content in support of a stronger research enterprise and a better informed public,” said Jamie Vernon, editor-in-chief of American Scientist and director of science communications and publications for Sigma Xi.
American Scientist’s November–December 2014 issue earned an Award of Excellence in the category for print magazines, journals, and tabloids with more than 32 pages. The magazine earned a similar award in 2005 for magazines and journals printed in four color. The September–October 2014 issue brought home this year’s design and layout Award of Excellence in the category for magazines, journals, and tabloids. This is the second consecutive year American Scientist earned an award for design and layout. Additionally, the magazine was honored for design and layout in 2013, when the category only included magazines and journals.
American Scientist is an illustrated magazine about science, engineering, and technology that has been published since 1913. Its articles are written by scientists and engineers. Starting July 1, 2015, Sigma Xi members get a print or digital subscription included with their membership dues.
APEX Awards for Publication Excellence is the 27th annual awards program recognizing a range of outstanding communication materials including newsletters, magazines, brochures, and websites. This year’s judges evaluated nearly 1,900 entries. They awarded 82 Grand Awards for outstanding work in 11 major categories and 749 Awards of Excellence to recognize excellence in 100 categories. Entries were evaluated for the quality of their graphic design and editorial content as well as the entry’s success in conveying its message. The APEX program is sponsored by Communications Concepts, Inc.
