Sigma Xi Will Hold Its Annual Meeting and Student Research Conference Online

June 01, 2020

Annual Meeting Goes Virtual
RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC—Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society will transform its 2020 Annual Meeting and Student Research Conference from an in-person gathering to a dynamic, interactive, online experience. The decision to change the event is a precautionary measure in response to uncertainties surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic.

The meeting dates will remain November 5–8, 2020, and the theme will be Hacking the Brain: The Intersection of Art and Neuroscience. Instead of meeting in Alexandria, Virginia, professional scientists, engineers, artists, chapter delegates, students, friends, and fans of science will attend conference components online featuring:

  1. presentations by world-renowned scientists, engineers, and artists about what art and science can do together than neither can do alone,

  2. sessions on science communication, professional development, and research ethics

  3. posters and presentations by students from high schools, colleges, and universities worldwide,

  4. networking events for students to engage with colleges and graduate schools and explore higher education and career options,

  5. business meetings by the Society’s Board of Directors and Assembly of Delegates, and

  6. a virtual festival of STEM art and film.

“We are thrilled to have this opportunity to expand access to Sigma Xi’s annual meeting during this new era of social distancing,” said Sonya Smith, Sigma Xi president-elect and chair of the meeting’s Program Committee. “We are creating a unique digital experience that will showcase scientific and engineering advancements and the talented artists who creatively translate and transform how science is conducted and taught. The virtual format allows for scientists and non-scientists to participate in this unique event from the comfort of their homes.”

Registration rates will be adjusted to reflect an online event. Those who already registered will receive a partial refund.

Sessions will be organized by tracks to explore what neuroscience teaches us about how the ways we see, hear, and move influence our ability to create and process new knowledge. The Student Research Conference and the College and Graduate School Fair are open to all high school, undergraduate, and graduate students.

The STEM Art and Film Festival, which occurs throughout the online conference, invites the public to engage with science, technology, engineering, and math in new and exciting ways.
