Becoming a Member
Membership in Sigma Xi is by nomination and is conferred in one of two ways.
Full Membership is conferred upon any individual who has shown
noteworthy achievement
as an original investigator in a field of pure or applied science or engineering.
Associate Membership is available to any individual who has, through
initial research achievement
in a field of pure or applied science, shown an aptitude for research.
Please see the Qualifications for Membership
for more information. Students and non-students follow the same review process.
Individuals who were previously elected as an Associate Member and who now
meet the requirements for Full Membership can apply for Promotion
to Full Membership.
Individuals may request nomination to membership through a Sigma
Xi chapter or through the Sigma Xi Committee on Qualifications and
Membership. If the nominee works at or near an institution with
an active Sigma Xi chapter, the nomination should be processed through
that chapter. All nominations sent to the Committee will be re-routed
through the appropriate chapter whenever possible. This will connect
new members to local chapters from the start of their membership.
It not only encourages the members' involvement in local Sigma Xi
activities but also helps strengthen the local chapters. Please
consult the chapter listing
to determine if an active chapter exists in your area.
To request nomination through a local Sigma Xi CHAPTER:
Please fill out either this
Word or
PDF
nomination form and present it to any officer of the selected chapter.
To locate a chapter officer, consult the chapter listing
or call the administrative office at 919-549-4691 or 800-243-6534.
To request nomination through the COMMITTEE on Qualifications and Membership:
Submit this online
nomination form. Or you may mail this Word
or PDF
nomination form to Sigma Xi, P.O. Box 13975, Research Triangle Park,
NC 27708 or e-mail it to membership@sigmaxi.org.
This form may be submitted with one or two nominators. If submitted
with one nominator, the Committee on Qualifications and Membership
can act as the second nominator. The Committee can also act as both
the first and second nominator for individuals who are not familiar
with a Full Member of Sigma Xi. Results of the review will be sent
via e-mail in approximately 6 to 8 weeks.
