Summer and Fall, 1997
The newly re-energized Long Range Planning Committee met for its second and third meetings in August and October of 1997. The August meeting focused on membership.
There was extensive discussion regarding:
- initiating and tracking members
- adding value to membership
- increasing Sigma Xi's visibility
- facilitating chapters
- utilizing current programs and activities
Numerous suggestions for prospective member benefits, program initiatives, and governance proposals aimed at adding more value to membership in Sigma Xi were put forward. The Long Range Planning Committee is working closely with the membership committee on this issue.
The October meeting focused on Sigma Xi programs. Peter Blair indicated that the societies first focus is on empowering chapters. A wide variety of programs that are in place, under development, or suggested were reviewed. The committee will prioritize these programs by e-mail in the near future. Input from members, chapters, and regions regarding their priorities is needed. A forthcoming electronic survey of the membership will provide much of this information.
