John Kelley received a B.S. in geophysics/geochemistry at the Pennsylvania State University in 1958 and a Ph.D in 1973 at Nagoya University, Japan. He served in the U.S. Army from 1953-55. He conducted research in micrometeorology and atmospheric chemistry at the University of Washington from 1959-1968. Dr. Kelley joined the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) in 1968 and currently serves as Professor of Marine Science in the School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences. His research interests are in the field of trace gases and metals, contaminants and radioactivity in marine and terrestrial environments. For the past 24 years he also has conducted a program to encourage minority and especially Alaska Native undergraduate students to pursue careers in science, math and engineering. While at the UAF he served as Director of the Naval Arctic Research Laboratory and Director of the National Science Foundation's Polar Ice Coring Office. Dr. Kelley has served as chair of the North Slope Borough's Science Advisory Committee since 1980. He has served two terms as president of the Alaska Chapter of Sigma Xi and currently serves as Secretary-Treasurer since 1995. He is a member of the American Geophysical Union, The Explorers Club (Fellow), The Arctic Institute of North America (Fellow) and the Rotary Club. He was appointed in 2004 to serve on the National Academies of Science International Polar Year (IPY) National Planning Committee.
